First I want to say that I love the name of this podcast....Gutter Trash...rolls of the tongue like melted butter. Also, it's just really funny. Their website is extremely easy to use and helpful. Nothing frustrates me more than flipping through a podcast's website only to run into several broken and useless links. They've really thought their website through and organized it in a way that first time listeners can learn about them, listen to past episodes and learn about other projects they've been working on.
The first episode I listened to, Evil Ernie - War of the Dead, the guys set out to read and review a mini-comic series called Evil Ernie. I mean how can you not want to read and review this? It sounds like good campy fun. Too bad it was such a nightmare for both of them. The guys bemoaned the horrible artwork, the terrible story line and their hatred for a living button who lives inside someone's eyeball for a bit. I mean the comic really sounds terrible. It's so terrible, that Jason admits to not even reading some of it. Of course this pisses Eric off because he had to suffer through the whole thing in the name of the podcast.
I thought their review of this comic was hilarious. They would say things like, "Remember this character....he did this....yeah, that sucked...." I have to say they almost made me want to read Evil Ernie just to see how bad it really is. I have never seen a podcast review something where both reviewers agree that the item reviewed was garbage. Even after the team take a break, they sound pretty disappointed that they don't like this comic. For being a bad review, I thought it was a good review. They spend the whole podcast going over the parts they didn't like so that the listeners understand that their dislike did stem from somewhere.
In the next episode I listened to, they brought on a special guest, Pat. This episode seemed a bit more....manly....for my tastes. They review a movie called Year of the Carnivore which appears to be a coming of age comedy about a quirky girl. They repeatedly say that this movie is not targeted for their age group or gender. So, what else is there to do but discuss the sex scenes and the hotness of one of the actresses (which the guys point out you get to see naked twice during the movie)...it's at this point that one podcaster burps and I think Pat farts.
Once we get past this display of manliness (and the discussion of the movie which the podcasters liked but weren't crazy about) this episode actually gets really good. Eric and Jason give Pat the reins and he talks about his recent time on Titmouse (an animation company that does such delights as Metalocalypse and Super Jail). I actually know of Titmouse and saw a Titmouse animation team at a concert in LA checking out the talent for an upcoming cartoon. Pat's story of how he got the internship is actually really cool and inspiring. It made me feel like going out and just 'effin going for a dream because you never know where you may end up.....you could be in New York, working for a famous animation company and setting yourself up to do the things you love for the rest of your life. So kudos to Pat for being so damn inspirational even if he didn't mean to be.
Overall, I did like this podcast. It was very real and seemed very unscripted. The guys get in a lot of laughs and had me laughing out loud with them. I loved the review of Evil Ernie and am glad the podcasters decided to go ahead and review it instead of chucking the idea and going with something they enjoyed reading more.
Would I listen to it again? Yes.
