Audio Shocker's website is a fun romp in nerd-dome. A group of contributors have created a website complete with original online comics, art, and four podcasts. One of the headlines on their website touts they output two podcasts a week. For anyone who knows anything about podcast production, this is quite a grueling pace as some podcasts struggle to maintain a once a week podcast. Audio Shocker has been around since 2007 and has built a solid fan base of regular listeners.
The four podcasts on their website are: Audio Shocker Podcast, A Podcast With Nick and Ross, Sequential Underground, and HyperComboCast. It would be frustrating if all four podcasts were similar in subject, but Audio Shocker has taken great care to have each podcast be unique and appeal to possibly completely different audiences.
One of the most unique podcasts on this website is Sequential Underground. Sequential Underground is a podcast for indie comicbook artists hosted by indie comic book artists. There are 21 episodes so far covering a wide range of topics from artistic voice to giving up to building an online audience. All of the contributors seem to speak from experience and provide such insightful feedback to the creative process. If you have ever wanted to start an online web comic or are currently working on one, then I highly suggest checking out this podcast that happens every Wednesday, For the next episode, they're encouraging listeners to call in and share their scrapped web comic projects. I'm looking forward to this episode! I think the thing that attracts me to this particular podcast is it seems like a round table discussion group you might attend at a Con.
The HyperComboCast is another unique podcast concept. This podcast seems to have just started as their most recent episode is their eighth. This podcast is dedicated to fighting video games. They give equal attention to classic fighting games, current fighting games, and upcoming fighting games. They don't review the games, but instead Kenny and Nick just have a conversation about various fighting games. From their conversations, you can determine if the game may be something you want to check out on your own. Kenny really owns this podcast as he seems very knowledgeable. He's fun to listen to and I like his enthusiasm in discussing the various games. I'm not much into fighting games and this podcast made me want to run out and play one and scream, "YEAH!"
A Podcast With Ross and Nick and Audio Shocker Podcast are perfect compliments to each other. Firstly, both of them are relatively short, running between 20-30 minutes. If you're looking for a quick podcast to compliment a little computer surfing time, then I recommend listening to either of these. The Audio Shocker podcast seems to be the flagship podcast for the entire website. Nick, Justique, and Neal talk about a wide variety of pop culture content. Sometimes they discuss comics, sometimes movies, sometimes television, just whatever happens to pop into their head at the time. In this podcast, it seems like they tend to stay away from spoilers. In the podcast I listened to, they reviewed Capt. America and Harry Potter. They gave their overall impressions of the film without ruining them for people who have yet to see the films.
Their other podcast, A Podcast With Ross and Nick is very entertaining. For several episodes they tried to review the X-men Extreme Cartoon, but gave up on the project a few weeks in. In the episode I listened to, they discuss their grooming habits and responded to fan feedback. I think it's great they're able to interact with their fans in this manner. To me, anything that makes a podcast more real, is a plus. They have an automated telephone number set up so that fan callers can leave messages (most of them hilarious) and they read their fan e-mails. To see a podcast really acknowledge their fans during a podcast is pretty cool and really helps ensure that people keep listening. If you're interested, you can call in for the next episode and discuss your own grooming habits.
Overall, I really enjoyed all of the podcasts on this website. If you're looking for some new content in your life, then I highly suggest checking out the Audio Shocker website. Even if you're not a podcast person, the site still offers more than just their four podcasts.
Would I listen to it again? Yes, I especially enjoyed Sequential Underground.
